Week 10: #23 Is this really the end!

WOW! What a journey!

I can not believe the amount of information that I learned from the iHCPL Learning 2.o Program. I thought I new a lot from helping my sons with school projects using Powerpoint, but if I new then what I know now, they would have had spectacular presentations. The information I learned was also beneficial for me. I will continue to use the Library Elf, I think that is a very helpful tool (especially if you have to keep up with more than one account). Making my avatar was a lot of fun and so was making videos. I envision a lot of the tools to become more valuable once people become more familiar with them, especially Zoho. I can see students taking advantage of all the freedom that the program can offer. I hope this is not the end, but only the beginning of HCPL keeping their employees and customers in the fore front of computer technology.

WAY TO GO HCPL!!!

Week 9: #22 Downloadable Media

My first introduction to downloadable media was in HCPL’s Digital Books 101 training class. HCPL offers digital books and audio books on various topics and numerous authors. I believe that with the volume and ease of obtaining the book that you want, there is no need to go to the other sources that are mentioned. I did look at them, but found HCPL to have better choices. I enjoy listening to audio books, but when I want to read a book, I prefer to curl up with a book in my hand versus reading it online. My only suggestion would be to have universities and colleges look into making some of their books available to students in this format.

Week 9: #21 Podcast/Smodcast

I explored www.podcast.net and www.podcastalley.com and found them to be very interesting. The number of listing were numerous and covered every topic I was interested in. I added a gospel music site and a jazz site to my blogline. I believe that podcasts and ipods have made a radical change in technology and they are here to stay (until some newer, more advanced technology comes along).

Week 9: #20 Discover YouTube

Watch Team USA in the World Youth Championships at Czech Republic get that GOLD in the Swedish Medley Relay!! They are in lane 5 and the legs are, first leg, Isaiah Sweeney, second, Kenneth Gilstrap, third, William Wyne, and last is Danzell Fortson. Way to go USA!!!

I was already familiar with YouTube because my sons showed me different videos that some of their friends made. I searched the name of my son's high school and was amazed at all the videos that appeared. Some of them were good (talent shows, pep rally, games) and some were in poor taste (food fights), but overall they were fun to watch.

I believe it is obvious why I selected this particular video. I AM A VERY PROUD SPORTS MOM!!!

I think HCPL could use YouTube as a way to inform the public of different services that they offer. HCPL could record their puppet shows and children's reading time.

Week 8: #19 Web-based Apps

EXCELLENCE

Excellence is the result of caring

more than others think is necessary,

risking more than others think is

practical and expecting more

than others think is possible.

This was published in Zoho. I think Zoho is an excellent tool. It can easily be used by students who work on multiple computers. I also liked the To Do/Planner that can be generated from Zoho. Great way to keep up with my family's busy sports schedules.

Week 8: #18 Social Networking

My sons introduced me to "myspace" and I think it is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. You can also share pictures instantly with people across the country. I explored "ratemyspace" and enjoyed this site. It was fun to see how other people have redesigned their homes and you can get ideas from them. But, like one of our earlier lessons emphasized, you must practice Internet safety on these sites.
